Simon Robinson

Managing Principal

Work and clients: Simon’s focus is on hand-holding, nurturing individuals and their businesses, guiding them through red tape and managing expansion. His accounting expertise, married to a wealth of tax experience, enables him to advise on a range of issues from the structure of a new business to the tax implications of proposed transactions. His clients include those in sectors such as entertainment & media, professional practices, property & construction, owner managed business, information technology, retailers, charities and private clients. He is joint head of the firm's not-for-profit team and holds a diploma in Charity Accounting. Simon is involved in the recruitment and training of staff in-house. He also represents the firm within its international association, AGN.

The route to Shipleys: Simon qualified whilst working with HW Fisher and Co. and worked with KPMG. He joined Shipleys in 1989, becoming a principal in 1995 and Managing Principal in 2015.

Memberships: Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. Simon sits on the firm’s Audit Technical Committee.

Aim: "To help clients with the real 'nitty-gritty' without losing the overview."

Most entertaining deal or case: "Being told I could not possibly be an accountant. People have an expectation of what an accountant will be and do. The biggest buzz I get out of my job is understanding my clients and their needs and helping them achieve their goals, invariably the advice won't just cover the accounts!"

Proudest professional moments: "There are a number but the best are always where I've helped my client save money or achieve something they've wanted to achieve."

What I like about my job: "Helping clients spot opportunities and contributing to their business success."

Interests outside work: Simon is married with two children and lives in Surbiton, Surrey. He is keen on sport, although perhaps increasingly more as a spectator than participant! He enjoys watching rugby and cricket, plays cricket for Netherne village, skis and plays golf. He drives his family mad by getting excited at the credits on television for programmes made by his entertainment & media clients.
