Work and clients: Anything from projections and business plans to pure audits. In situations such as listings, fundraising, restructuring, sales and acquisitions, Joe helps clients to formulate their plans by showing the effect on financial performance. Clients are mainly larger private companies and complicated groups, typically with non-working shareholders/investors, or AIM-listed companies. His sector expertise includes financial services, clean energy, publishing, property and the technology sectors. Joe is the firm’s audit technical principal and is very adept at resolving technical audit issues.
The route to Shipleys: A Cambridge maths graduate, Joe joined Shipleys in 2000 and qualified in 2003, picking up an ICAEW Prize along the way. During his career with Shipleys Joe spent five months on secondment to Melbourne-based firm William Buck in 2004. He became a Principal in 2008 and now chairs the firm's Audit Technical and IT Committees
Aim: "To deliver on time at the right price."
Most entertaining deal or case: "One dream assignment was auditing a motor sport race team, which meant I got to meet some of the drivers and visit the factory. I've also worked on projects for a luxury yacht builder, so I know what people mean when they refer to a floating gin palace! I found visiting the yard and seeing the boats under construction fascinating. The passion for high quality materials and exemplary finish has to be seen to be believed."
Proudest professional moments: "Getting agreement on an R&D tax credit claim which hugely benefited my client, and which another accountancy firm had said was impossible."
What I like about my job: "Variety, meeting people, helping them with their businesses and getting clarity and realism into the business plan - with achievable results."
Interests outside work: Family Holidays (especially ski trips), socialising with friends and the occasional music gig.
