Jane Henman
Godalming and London

Aim: “To provide forward thinking advice on business and personal affairs spanning the ‘cradle to the grave’.”

Expertise: Business compliance services, tax planning, trusts & estates, private client services and company secretarial services.

Work and Clients: Jane became head of Shipleys trust department in 1992. She also maintains a strong portfolio, dealing with general accounts, audit, tax for UK and non UK domiciliaries and management advice for family companies. In addition, she provides "family office" facilities to a number of clients. Jane specialises in looking at a client's situation ‘in the round’ and uses her wide area of expertise not just to save tax but more to achieve the long-term objectives of the whole family.

Jane is also responsible for the firm's human resources (maintaining the firm’s long tradition of excellent staff retention), health and safety, and training including for ACA and ACCA qualifications.

The route to Shipleys: Trained with Chantry Vellacott, then moved as a mainstream auditor to a medium sized firm reputed for its advanced audit techniques. Became an equity principal of a predecessor firm of Shipleys five years after qualification.

Memberships: Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, Member of STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners), Institute of Directors.

Most entertaining deal or case: “Many years ago I acted for a large Italian manufacturing client. Dealing with the Italians in the UK who ran it was always a bundle of professional laughs as completing the audit was treated as a game of wits. To ensure that we had not ‘missed’ credit notes, which were often raised some time after a year end, I would conduct a final audit visit and check this on the day of signing the accounts. One year the reply to my questions on this topic (and the handful of credit notes) was delivered in a most charming Gallic manner, "Mrs Henman, you strip me naked". I took this to mean that the accounts were finally correct to sign!”

What I like about my job: “Without a doubt the massive variety. Because I advise clients over a huge range of topics and have clients who are highly globally mobile, I never know in the morning what I might be asked to do during the day ahead.”

Proudest professional moments: “There have been many but it remains enormously rewarding when the plans and actions that I have worked on with a client, sometimes over a number of years, do come to fruition and we jointly achieve the goal we set."

Interests outside work: Jane’s main and absorbing hobby is work with horses, now mostly directed at dressage, but she is also an active member of her local golf club and enjoys cooking, gardening and going to the theatre.
