Jay Sanghrajka

Aim: "to solve tricky tax problems"

What I like about my job: "finding a solution when others have given up!"

Office: London

Expertise: Business tax planning

Work and Clients: Jay is a specialist in both UK and international tax planning and has over over 30 years’ experience in advising  clients ranging from public companies and  substantial private companies to local family businesses and their owners on matters such as international structuring to profit extraction and maximising shareholder wealth.

Aside from having an excellent understanding of the tax issues for owner managed businesses, Jay also possesses valuable insight into many of the strategic issues facing such businesses, enabling him to advise on the effective structuring of business transactions and provide tax efficient solutions.

The route to Shipleys:  Trained with Coopers & Lybrand ( now PwC) before joining a medium size practice in the City which was sold to Tenon in 2000. Subsequently worked in Chantrey Vellacott before joining Shipleys in 2009.

Memberships: Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Chartered Institute of Taxation and Institute of Indirect Tax Practitioners.

Most entertaining deal or case: “ I was part of a team tendering for the audit and tax services of a public company with over 50 subsidiaries. We were pitching  against 5 other firms including 2 of the Big 4 and we had little time to come with a winning idea.  After a few late night discussions, a simple idea to restructure the group which would result in a much reduced tax charge annually won the assignment and there were a lot of celebrations in the office that day.”

Proudest professional moments: Negotiating a settlement with the Revenue for a client who was Chairman of a listed company where due to a technicality, the Revenue could not charge more than a nominal £100 penalty.

Interests outside work:  When he is off duty, Jay loves travelling as well as watching wildlife and people.
